What is Depo-Provera? Depo-Provera (depot-medroxyprogesterone) is an injectable form of birth control -- that is, it is given as a shot -- that protects against pregnancy for a full three months. Depo-Provera is made from a derivative of progesterone, the naturally occurring hormone produced by the ovaries during the second half of the menstrual cycle. The shot is usually given in the upper arm or buttock. Some women report a little soreness in the area the shot was given for a day or two.
How effective is Depo-Provera? Depo-Provera acts by preventing the egg cells from ripening, so no egg is present to become fertilized. Depo-Provera also causes changes in the lining of the uterus that make pregnancy less likely to occur. Depo-Provera requires no daily action on the part of the woman, making Depo-Provera one of the most effective methods of contraception available. Depo-Provera is 99.7% effective as long as the woman gets an injection every three months. Depo-Provera takes effect immediately after the injection occurs -- no waiting period is necessary! This means, of course, that the woman should have her first injection within five days of the beginning of her menstrual cycle, to be sure she is not pregnant.
